ASMR ads start with texture, not sound: notes from the Head Therapy shoot

The ASMR ad we shot for Head Therapy had to work with the sound off too. Here is how we turned foam, water and touch into images.

ASMR ads start with texture, not sound: notes from the Head Therapy shoot

ASMR is known as a sound experience: whispers, brushes, the crackle of foam. But on social media, nobody can guarantee a video will be watched with sound. Someone on the bus, at the office or in bed at night with their phone on silent sees the same ad. That is why, for the 28-second ASMR ad we shot for Head Therapy Spa & Wellness, we worked with one rule: a film you can “hear” even with the sound off.

What does Head Therapy sell, and what should the video show?

Head Therapy’s signature service is the head spa and head massage: washing the scalp, foam, massage and facial care. From the outside, it can look like an ordinary hair wash. The video’s job is to make the viewer feel, within seconds, that it is a relaxation ritual.

Texture instead of sound: shots you can “hear”

Two close-ups from the Head Therapy ASMR ad: hands massaging the foamy scalp of a guest wearing an eye mask
Everything that makes a sound also has a texture: water, foam, fingertips.
  • Macro close-ups. Bubbles in the foam, water running through the roots, the pressure of fingertips. When the eye sees the texture, the mind fills in the sound.
  • Still, slow camera. Fast camera moves break relaxation in ASMR. Most shots are locked off or drift very slowly.
  • Facial expression. A face relaxing under an eye mask is the shortest way to say “this feels good”.
  • A signature object. The venue’s gold ring appears in frame again and again on purpose. The brand becomes recognisable through this object before the logo appears.

A reward for those who turn the sound on

For viewers who turn the sound on, audio is a separate layer. In ASMR, sound cannot be an effect added later; it has to be recorded during the shoot with a microphone placed close to the water, the foam and the touch. In the edit these sounds sit in front of the music, and any music stays underneath them. The same video becomes a visual experience on mute and an auditory one with sound.

Showing the place: from the building to the treatment room

Three frames from the Head Therapy ad: the building’s facade, a guest walking through the revolving door and a guest smiling with her therapist after the treatment
The journey: building, door, treatment room. The viewer sees where to go first, then what they will experience there.

ASMR shots are beautiful on their own but can feel anonymous; the same footage could have been shot at any spa. So we built a short journey into the film: the building’s facade, the guest walking in, and the guest smiling with her therapist at the end of the treatment. These three shots add the layer that says “this is a real place, and you can come too”.

How to use it in advertising

ASMR videos can do two different jobs in ads. For people who don’t know the brand, the texture shots in the first seconds stop the scroll. For warm audiences, people who visited the site or follow the profile, the place and therapist shots persuade them to book. That is why we cut at least two versions from the same shoot: a short, texture-led cut and a full cut that also shows the venue. Which one works better with which audience we find out through A/B tests on the advertising side.

Checklist before shooting an ASMR ad

  • Can you switch off the music, air conditioning and machine noise in the venue during the shoot?
  • Is the practitioner comfortable on camera? Tension shows even in the hands.
  • For the guest role, choose someone relaxed on camera with a natural expression. The BEF Model portfolio exists for shoots like this.
  • Does the venue have a signature object? Show it more than once, from different angles.
  • Is it clear at the end where the viewer should go: location, website, booking line?
