What is conversion tracking? How to measure the sales your ads bring in
Conversion tracking records the calls, WhatsApp messages, forms and bookings your ads bring. How to set it up in Google Analytics, Google Ads and Meta.

Conversion tracking records whether someone who saw or clicked your ad then did something that matters to your business: called, sent a WhatsApp message, filled in a form, booked or bought. Without it, you see impressions and clicks, and a click isn’t a customer.
Short answer: Decide what counts as a conversion: a call, a WhatsApp message, a form or a booking. Mark these as key events in Google Analytics, send them to Google Ads and Meta, respect cookie consent, and check the figures against your own records.
What is a conversion, and why aren’t clicks enough?
A conversion is an action that matters to your business: a table booking for a cafe, an online appointment for a spa, a consultation request for a clinic, a trial class sign-up for a pilates studio. A click only signals interest.
Tracking also steers your ads: ad systems bring more of whatever you mark as a conversion. Count page views and they find page viewers; count bookings and they find people like those who book. So make the action closest to a sale your main conversion.
What to track by business type
| Business | Main conversion | Supporting signal | Tie it to sales |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cafe and restaurant | Booking, call, WhatsApp | Menu page, directions | Ask “how did you hear about us?”; a code used only in ads |
| Spa and wellness | Online booking, WhatsApp, call | Service and gift card pages | Source noted at reception; sales uploaded to ad accounts |
| Clinic and doctor | Appointment request, call | Contact page, directions | Source in the patient record; no health data sent to platforms |
| Pilates, padel and memberships | Trial class booking, membership enquiry | Schedule and package pages | Source noted at sign-up |
Calls
A tap on your site’s phone number is easy to track, but it shows intent, not a completed call. Google Ads call assets cover calls from ads, and your Google Business Profile reports profile calls. Asking “how did you find us?” fills the gap.
WhatsApp clicks
A WhatsApp click doesn’t prove a message was sent. Give the links on your site, Instagram profile and ads different pre-filled messages, such as “Hi, I’m writing from your website”, and the opening message reveals the source. For Meta ads that open WhatsApp, Ads Manager reports conversations started.
Forms
Count successful submissions, not clicks on Send, using a thank-you page or an event fired by the success message. Enhanced conversions in Google Ads send the form’s email or phone number hashed, improving accuracy when cookies are missing, if your privacy notice covers it.
Bookings
Many spas and restaurants use another company’s booking system; if it runs in an iframe or on another domain, tracking often breaks there. Send guests back to a confirmation page on your site, turn on cross-domain measurement in Google Analytics if the system allows it, or use its Google and Meta connections. Rebuilding your site? Plan this into the web design and development work.

Google Analytics, Google Ads and Meta: the parts of the setup
Google Analytics
Analytics shows behaviour on your site across every channel. Record important actions as events and mark the most valuable as key events; Google now keeps the word “conversion” for ad campaigns. Google Tag Manager holds your Analytics, Google Ads and Meta tags in the same place, and UTM parameters on Instagram, WhatsApp and printed QR code links stop that traffic showing up as direct.
Google Ads conversions
Google Ads can count conversions with its own tag or import key events from Analytics. Pick a method: if an action is a main conversion through the tag and the import, every booking is counted again. Offline conversion import ties sales made later, at the counter, at reception or on the phone, back to the ad click.
Meta Pixel and Conversions API
The Meta Pixel runs in the browser and misses events that browsers and ad blockers stop; the Conversions API sends them from your server. Give pixel and server events the same event ID so nothing is counted again. Standard events fit service businesses: Lead for forms, Contact for contact actions, Schedule for appointments. The Conversions API is no way around consent: if a visitor rejects cookies, don’t send their data from the server.

Cookie consent and KVKK
Under KVKK, Turkey’s personal data protection law, analytics and advertising cookies require the visitor’s explicit consent. A cookie banner can’t be decoration: when a visitor rejects, the tags must really stay off.
- Hold analytics and advertising tags until consent, using Tag Manager’s consent settings.
- Set up Google’s consent mode, which can model conversions lost to refusals, depending on the setup.
- Use the Meta Pixel’s consent commands so it only sends data after consent.
- Reject cookies yourself and check in Google Tag Assistant and Meta Pixel Helper that nothing fires.
- For healthcare brands, keep treatments, symptoms and patient details out of event names, page addresses and parameters; health data is a special category under KVKK.
Because of consent, platform figures will sit below reality, and that’s expected. Prepare your privacy notice and cookie policy with a lawyer; this article isn’t legal advice.
Reading the effect of ads on sales
Google Ads and Meta can each claim the same sale: someone who saw your Instagram ad and then clicked your search ad counts for each platform, so adding up the reports overstates reality. Your own records are the reference.

- Note every new customer’s source at reception and on the phone.
- Use a code that appears only in your ads and listen for it at the counter.
- Upload appointments and sales to the ad accounts, or compare them with the ad reports.
- Judge campaigns by bookings and sales, not clicks.
- Read changes in context: holidays, school breaks and weather move demand regardless of ads.
In the ad accounts we manage, we start with conversion tracking and share results in a live dashboard and a monthly report. For channel choice, see Google Ads vs Meta ads, or our digital advertising service to set it up with us.
Frequently asked questions
Is setting up Google Analytics enough?
No. Google Ads and Meta need the conversions too, and sales made on the phone, on WhatsApp or at the counter never reach Analytics by themselves.
If the Meta Pixel is installed, is the Conversions API still needed?
Usually, yes. The pixel misses some browser events, which the Conversions API sends from the server; a shared event ID stops them being counted again.
Why don’t platform conversions match our own records?
Each platform has its own counting rules and time windows, visitors who reject cookies aren’t measured, and platforms can claim the same sale. Look for trends, not an exact match.
Can clinics use conversion tracking?
Yes, with care: measure appointment requests and calls, but never send treatments, complaints or patient details to the platforms. As healthcare advertising to patients in Turkey is largely prohibited, tracking mostly shows requests from organic search, the Business Profile and social media; see our guide to healthcare advertising rules in Turkey.
