Google Ads vs Meta ads: how to choose the right channel for your business

Google Ads reaches people already looking for what you offer. Meta ads, on Instagram and Facebook, reach people who aren’t searching yet and give them a reason to want it. If your customers type the need into Google, search ads lead; if what they see on their screen makes the decision, Instagram and Facebook lead.

Short answer: If customers search for you when the need arises, start with Google Ads. If your venue or product sells on looks and you need to create demand, start with Meta ads. Either way, set up conversion tracking before the ads go live, and let its data tell you when to add the other channel.

The core difference: capturing demand vs creating it

On Google, the ad is triggered by what someone types. A person searching “hammam Bakırköy” or “breakfast Mahmutbey” knows what they want; your job is to show the right ad and page at that moment. The demand exists, and the ad points it towards you.

“Meta ads” covers Instagram and Facebook, all run from Meta Ads Manager. Nobody there is looking for you: people scroll, watch Reels, tap through stories. The ad has to stop the scroll, so the image matters as much as the targeting, and the opening of the video usually decides who stops.

Google isn’t only search: YouTube ads and Performance Max run on video too, and Performance Max spans Search, YouTube and Maps. Still, Google’s edge is intent.

Which channel suits which business?

Cafes and restaurants

Food and drink are chosen with the eyes, so Meta ads are usually the stronger start for cafes and restaurants: Reels that make people hungry, shown to nearby neighbourhoods at the right times. For “cafe near me” searches, Google tends to put map results at the top, where your Google Business Profile does most of the work. Keep alcohol out of your ads; it can’t be advertised in Turkey.

Spas and wellness

The channels complement each other here. Searches such as “massage Şişli” are ready demand for Google Ads, while videos of steam, touch and quiet, or gift card ads before Valentine’s Day, create demand on Meta. Sell the experience, not a result: unproven promises are a legal risk. More in our guide to social media for spa and wellness brands.

Doctors and clinics

The question before “which channel” is whether you can advertise at all. In Turkey, doctors and private healthcare providers are largely barred from advertising to patients in the country, sponsored posts included. Read our guide to healthcare advertising rules in Turkey before building a campaign; organic video, the website and the Business Profile usually carry these brands.

Membership businesses and service brands

For pilates studios, padel clubs and gyms, discovery often starts on Instagram, and a trial class form or a WhatsApp message turns interest into a lead; at decision time, people search Google for “pilates Etiler”. For repairs, maintenance or business services, Google Ads is almost always the starting point, ideally with a solid corporate website.

A checklist before you decide

  • Do people search Google for what you sell? Check the Keyword Planner and try district names too.
  • Does your business sell on looks? Then Meta works in your favour.
  • Where does the customer act: a call, WhatsApp, a booking form or the front door? Set the campaign goal to match.
  • Does your landing page load fast on a phone and say clearly what to do next?
  • Can you produce new video regularly? Creatives wear out on Meta.
  • Is conversion tracking in place?
  • Do healthcare, alcohol or beauty-sector rules restrict your ads?
  • Are the ad accounts and analytics data in your business’s name?

Setups that work on each channel

Google Ads

  • Read the search terms report and add irrelevant searches, such as “massage therapist jobs” for a spa, as negative keywords.
  • In location settings, target people in or regularly in your area, not those merely interested in it.
  • Run ads when someone can answer the phone.
  • Send each ad group to its matching page, such as the massage page, not the homepage.
  • Link your Google Business Profile so your address shows with the ads.

Meta ads

  • Use vertical video, show the product or place right at the start, and add captions for people watching muted.
  • Test creatives side by side: a venue tour, a product close-up, a team member talking to camera.
  • For a local business, target a radius around your venue rather than the whole city.
  • Try ads that open a WhatsApp chat; with instant forms, the higher intent option adds a review step and brings more serious leads.
  • Replace creatives as performance drops, so plan shoots ahead.

Our own team produces the ad creatives, shooting at your venue or on location; see photo and video production.

How the channels work together

Google and Meta aren’t rivals. Someone sees your venue’s video on Instagram, later searches your name on Google and books: Meta created the demand, Google captured it, and a last-click view hides Instagram’s part.

Start with the channel closest to how your customers behave, use conversion tracking to see what brings calls, messages and bookings, then add the other; Instagram reminders for site visitors who didn’t book link the channels.

In the accounts we manage, we set up conversion tracking, test audiences and creatives, and share results in a live dashboard and a monthly report. See our guide to conversion tracking, or our digital advertising service to plan your start with us.

Frequently asked questions

Which brings results faster, Google Ads or Meta ads?

Where demand exists, Google Ads usually brings calls and forms faster, because people are already searching. Meta needs time to learn and to test creatives, but it can create demand for things hardly anyone searches for.

Should a small business run Google Ads and Meta ads at the same time?

Not necessarily. Start with the channel that fits your customers, get measurement right, then add the other. Launch them together without tracking and you can’t tell what worked.

If Google Ads isn’t working, is the channel the problem?

Usually not. Check the search terms, the landing page, its speed on a phone and the tracking. If all of that is sound, there may be too few searches for what you sell, and creating demand on Meta makes more sense.

Can doctors advertise on Google or Instagram in Turkey?

Doctors and private healthcare providers are largely barred from advertising to patients in Turkey, with narrow exceptions. Our guide to healthcare advertising rules in Turkey has the details.
