Restaurant and cafe marketing in Istanbul: from Google Maps to Reels (2026 guide)

Restaurant and cafe marketing in Istanbul works in four layers: being found on Google (Business Profile, Maps and reviews), making people hungry on Instagram and TikTok (Reels), showing ads to people nearby (location targeting on Meta and Google) and bringing customers back (WhatsApp, loyalty and direct orders). In 2026 two legal changes are part of the job too: new limits on alcohol brand visuals and Turkey’s menu price-list rules.

We produce content and shoots for cafes and restaurants such as Fi Coffee, Famone, Stiela, Last Summer and Sarı Fırın. This guide sets out what works on the ground, together with Google’s and Meta’s own rules and Turkey’s 2026 regulations.

Short answer: Start by completing your Google Business Profile with the menu, photos, hours and ordering links, and collect reviews within the rules. Then post a few Reels a week and run local ads within a 2–5 km radius. Alcohol advertising is banned in Turkey, and service, table and cover charges have been banned since January 2026.

Why these four layers?

According to TÜİK’s 2026 household IT survey, 92.3% of people aged 16–74 in Turkey use the internet; of internet users, 90% use WhatsApp, 77.6% YouTube and 71.1% Instagram (Anadolu Agency). Your customer finds you on Google Maps, likes you on Instagram and books on WhatsApp. Each layer fills the gap the previous one leaves.

1. Google Business Profile: showing up on the map

According to Google, local ranking depends on relevance (how well a profile matches the search), distance and prominence (how well known the business is). More reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, and you can’t pay for a better position (Google). The profile should include:

  • Menu: food and drink businesses can add their menu; upload a photo or PDF and Google converts it to text, and changes take 24–48 hours to appear (Google).
  • Ordering links: add your own ordering link next to the delivery apps and mark it as preferred (Google).
  • Posts: updates, offers and events; posts without a date range are archived after 6 months (Google).
  • Photos and videos: photos in JPG or PNG, 10 KB–5 MB, recommended 720×720 pixels; videos up to 30 seconds and 75 MB (Google).
  • Correct hours: enter holiday hours in advance; a customer sent to a closed venue will say so in a review.

A customer’s first meeting with the venue is often a photo on Google Maps.

2. Reviews: collecting them within the rules

Reviews are a restaurant’s strongest social proof, but there are rules on how to collect them. Google explicitly prohibits offering incentives such as free or discounted goods in exchange for reviews; sending customers your Google review link or a QR code is fine (Google). Discouraging negative reviews, asking only happy customers, or giving staff review quotas also break the content policy (Google). You can’t delete reviews, only flag those that break the policy; your replies are public and the reviewer is notified.

A practical approach: a small QR card with the bill and on the table, the line “Would you share your experience on Google?”, and a calm reply to every review, negative ones included, within 48 hours.

3. Instagram and TikTok: short videos that make people hungry

In restaurant social media, what makes the difference is not how often you post but the first seconds of each video. Five patterns work again and again in our shoots:

  • The build: the plate assembled layer by layer in front of the viewer. Famone’s pancake bowl video was built this way.
  • The pour: chocolate, honey, sauce; anything that flows stops the scroll. Sarı Fırın’s strawberry dessert is an example.
  • The location line: a first-frame line naming the neighbourhood, such as “Mahmutbey’s new Pinterest cafe”. We used this for Last Summer.
  • Table and view: at breakfast venues, keep the food and the place together. Stiela’s terrace is an example.
  • The first bite: the last beat of the video should be a facial expression.

Watch the length: Instagram Reels can run up to 20 minutes, but Reels over 3 minutes aren’t recommended to new audiences (Instagram). For restaurants, 15–30 seconds is usually enough. Monthly content and package prices are in our guide to social media management costs in Turkey.

4. Ads for people nearby

A cafe’s customers usually come from within a few kilometres. On Meta you can target a radius of 1–80 km around an address or pin (Meta); 2–5 km is a good start for a city-centre cafe, a little wider for a restaurant in a mall or on a main road. On Google, local search ads and location assets linked to your Business Profile cover searches like “cafe near me”; September 2026 estimates put the cost per click for restaurant searches in Istanbul at around TRY 12.6. For budgets, see our guides to Instagram ads costs and Google Ads costs in Turkey.

5. Menu and food photography

The same photos are used on your Google profile, the menu, delivery apps and ads, so food photography shot well once works in every channel. Published price lists in Turkey put menu and food photos at TRY 1,000–3,200 per dish; see our guide to product photography costs in Istanbul.

6. Delivery apps and direct orders

Delivery apps bring visibility, at a cost. In December 2025, Turkey’s Ombudsman found that commission plus delivery fees could reach 32%, and up to 60% with discounts and ads, and recommended a cap on commissions (Ekonomim). Under the Ministry of Trade’s circular 2026/1, platforms must itemise all fees in the seller panel, and taking part in campaigns and ads is voluntary, with no penalty for declining (Ministry of Trade). Our advice: use the apps for discovery, and move loyal customers to your own ordering link on Google, your WhatsApp line or your website.

7. Influencers and micro creators

Small accounts that live in your neighbourhood often fill more tables than big influencers. The rules became clearer in July 2026: under Article 23/A added to Turkey’s Commercial Advertising Regulation, ads through social media influencers must be clear, understandable and distinguishable, and a post must be disclosed as advertising if the influencer received a benefit such as a free meal (mevzuat.gov.tr). Giving each collaboration its own discount code is the easiest way to see which account actually brings customers.

8. Two legal points for 2026

  • Alcohol: under Law No. 4250, alcoholic drinks may not be advertised or promoted to consumers in any way; Law No. 7584 of June 2026 also banned keeping alcohol brand names, logos and packaging visuals inside or outside venues and in windows, giving businesses one year to comply (Law No. 4250). Meta and Google don’t allow alcohol ads in Turkey either (Meta). Happy-hour campaigns and bottle shots are therefore a risk.
  • Price lists: under Turkey’s Price Label Regulation, food and drink businesses must display price lists at the entrance and on the tables; a QR code on the table is allowed, but a printed list must be provided on request. Since an amendment of 30 January 2026, no charges may be made under the names service charge, table charge or cover charge (Price Label Regulation). You can turn this into content: “Prices at the door and on the menu, no cover charge” builds trust.

9. What to measure

  • Calls and direction requests from your Google Business Profile
  • Bookings and WhatsApp messages
  • Orders through your own ordering link
  • Use of influencer and campaign codes
  • Profile visits from Reels and direction taps from the profile

Frequently asked questions

How much should a restaurant spend on ads?

There is no single number; work it out from the number of bookings or orders you want. For local ads, start with a small radius and one campaign and test for two weeks. Our Instagram and Google ads cost guides explain the calculation.

How can I promote a cafe with no budget?

Start with three free steps: complete your Google Business Profile with the menu and photos, put a review QR card on every table, and shoot two short phone videos a week. An ad budget works better once this base is in place.

Can I offer a discount in exchange for a Google review?

No. Google explicitly prohibits incentives such as free or discounted goods in exchange for reviews. Sending customers a review link or QR code is fine.

Can I post the alcoholic drinks on my menu?

Advertising and promoting alcoholic drinks to consumers is banned in Turkey, and Meta and Google don’t allow alcohol ads there. Posts and campaigns showing bottles and brand visuals are a risk.

Can restaurants in Turkey charge a service charge?

No. Since 30 January 2026, no charges may be made under the names service charge, table charge or cover charge; tips are excluded.
